I’m sitting here brainstorming ideas in my head and before I go off on a tangent about why I started writing, I’m going to jot down the ideas I came across.
- Investing in trading cards – inspiration the Gary V podcast – and my strategy to rank top 3 on Google for “how to buy sports cards” and then monetize.
- My analogy of the heavy ladder vs the light ladder – why sometimes someone can’t tell you why ‘this’ way is better, you have to try for yourself.
- Google Tag Manager – My transcendence, tips and fails.
- Optimising every photo on your website to increase load speeds in about 2 minutes – and the strategy the service uses to get you to pay $25 US, don’t fall for it.
Okay so now I have a few ideas out there I wanted to back track to why I wrote them out in the first place. I could be here thinking for a long time about what to write, I could do that so long that I would not end up writing anything. This is what I would call being productive and not being active, like reading a book but not applying the learnings to your day. I learnt this idea from a book, people read a lot of books and they feel very productive, not many of them actually put the learnings into practice.
I decided to take action ‘be active’ and put finger to key, and wow look at me go!
Investing In Trading Cards
Lets nut this first one out real quick. Gary Vee is a controversial motivational marketing mastermind. He really enjoys buying and selling trading cards. He thinks they are one of the best fads to get behind. Values of players can go up enormously which made me think of jumping on the bandwagon, heck why not.
I did a quick Google of “how to buy sports cards” reading the article while at the gym listening to the Gary V Podcast. “https://medium.com/high-upside/everything-you-need-to-start-investing-in-sports-cards-43f29eb00a16“. Upon reaching the end I noticed the article was written on the platform medium.com, which is a blogging network you can write on for free. The article had 3 claps and 1 comment yet was ranking first on Google?!
Wow cool, so what!?
If you read the article you’ll notice about 10-15 links putting outwards to other products. For example where to buy the sport cards from. Some of these sport cards are going for around 5k+. If you purchase a card through this article the article writer will take a nice little cut. Not only for the sport card but anything you buy through any of the links.
As I write this my mind is trailing off into, sure but would newbies be following that link and buying expensive cards? If they sign up does the referrer earn commissions forever or just for the first purchase?
I would call these thoughts very productive. They are dangerous though as they are not very active. If I just rewrote the article, I could send it to the Google gods to get ranked and start getting traffic to my website and perhaps some sales. Yes Activity always wins. You have to move fast and not get caught up in the technicalities all the time. #beactive
So there is abit of the strategy behind how to monetize the site but how to rank first? We’ll considering this person is on medium, if you wrote an article that had more words and got more claps and more comments, which in this case wouldn’t be very hard, it is my hypothesis that you would have a good chance of ranking higher and badda bing badda boom.
Heavy Ladder Vs Light Ladder
Ok next point, this is just a quick one on trial by fire. I was doing some work on a roof for a little side hustle. My co-worker said don’t use that nice sturdy reliable ladder that seemed so safe and strong albeit heavy. He said use this light disgrace of a ladder. No! I exclaimed, lugging this heavy amalgamation of metal. Although my journey to the top of the roof was nice, I very soon… By the next job or two… retired the heavy ladder for its lighter cousin.
This same story repeats like a fractal in time. Whether it be in marketing practices or business units. Some people need trials by fire to learn. For me learning in this style makes the lessons learnt very concrete in my mind. Lets throw in another #beactive here, if I wasn’t ever active – I wouldn’t ever learn. Mind = Blown.
Google Tag Manager Trials and Tribulations
Google Tag Manager! What a piece of lovely marketing innovation this is. It promises you the world and then leaves you like a moment of clarity. I am currently working on an end to end attribution model https://neilpatel.com/blog/best-analytics-attribution-model/ and loaded up the Tag Manager assistant. I felt like some badass hacker looking 1 layer deeper into the webpage to find what was firing and setting events and the such! Yes you guesses it, I was being extremely active 😉
I made some great progress but did have trouble getting the events that I was firing in Google Tag Manager to actualise in Google Analytics.

Optmise Photos for Decreased Page Load Speeds Beep Boop.
This last one was pretty cool!
I was on Google Search Console… Wow I’m truly so sorry for boring you so much, however, if you are still here with me and like what I’m putting down well read on good friend!
So while checking my core website vitals I ended up on Google Page Speed Insights https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/ (it’s never a fun time) which told me one of my sites has a score of 8/100 arghhh. This was for mobile first indexing.
This was kind of fair enough as I hadn’t done a whole lot of work to make this improve in anyway.
The number 1 issue? My sites images weren’t optimised (you can reduce the image size to help the page load faster without taking a image quality hit).
The typical way you might do this is to upload the files 1 by 1 to https://tinypng.com/. Or you could download the wordpress plugin – if you are using wordpress to do it all in one go!
The trouble here is that you need an API key, to get the API key you need and Account, when you press log in it says you don’t have an account. There is no clear way of how to make an account. Ok sure! To save myself uploading 500 images+ i must have to Go Pro! There is a lovely call to action below tempting you to go pro. See image below.
I did not want to pay for the Pro function so I went to the footer and found this:

And Bam! I found my API key, got the plugin working and compressed 500 images on my site in about 5 minutes.
This was a great transcendence feeling, if I had tried to optimise the images a year ago I would’ve had to go through them 1 by 1. Or fork out the 25 bucks… Good luck!
Key lesson learnt – complete that extra 5% go the extra mile you’ve got this you beautiful human!
